Few of our plastics make it to recycling centers the Environmental Protection Agency reported in 2015 that just 9 percent of all plastics were recycled.
Experts say the number one way to reduce plastic waste is to cut back on the amount we use in our daily lives !
Therefore, these are 5 ways I reduce and reuse Plastic waste in my community and among my peers!
1. I Take along my own bags that’s a paper bag and containers to the grocery store !
2. I Say ‘no’ to straws and plastic lids
When ordering from restaurants and cafes, I forgo straws and plastic coffee cup lids if possible.
3. Get a stainless steel water bottle
Another great way i to reduce waste is to always carry my own reusable water bottle.
4. I also regularly volunteer with NGOs such as Plastic Punch during their beach clean ups where I join to advocate on why plastics are bad and not healthy for the environment in which we live and specially to our ocean.
5. I also reuse plastic waste into sustainable innovations with a social enterprise where I work as their production manager Mckingtorch Africa . We collect over 10,000 plastic waste from households and reuse them into art works, plastic wastebin ,plastic waste segregation house and more !
Activity 1
In case you don’t know I have a real case at hand. The pencil and pen case solution for plastic pollution. Rewriting the future with pen and pencils we will keep in this. This case is make from waste plastic bottle and waste fabric materials from Ghana . I believe if we really want to win the war against plastic pollution,we would need to make it everyone’s case.
And before we can achieve this we all need to segregate our waste at home expecially the plastic waste so you can create something like this and sell to students in schools to earn an income or sell to a recycling company in your country !
Activity 2
Today I engaged students of Unto Others International School in my community about the problem of Plastic Pollution! And how they can play a major role in putting a stop to plastic pollution in their schools, communities and Homes !
Why ?
This is because Single-use #plastics do not always make it to the #landfill or get #recycled. Thirty-two percent of the plastics produced each year flow into our #oceans. That equates to one garbage truck of plastic being poured into our oceans every minute.
Therefore, educating our future generations how to reduced single use plastic in their schools, homes and community is long term investment in preventing them from following our footsteps or the harm we've already created!
Let’s always remember that ,
A Healthy Environment =Healthy Future !
It is our job to ensure our future generations enjoy the world like we did !
Activity 3
Today I engaged students from University of Ghana, University Of Professional Studies And Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. I spoke to them about plastic pollution and also shared my designed Poster on 9 TIPS OF LIVING A LESS PLASTIC LIFESTYLE!
